News from Campus & General Announcements

Special Message...

Dear Comets,
We thank our students, parents and teachers for your cooperation and hard work during these unprecedented times. Even though we are separated by distance, the Comet Community remains strong, united, and working towards always guiding our students to excel in faith and academics.

As the academic year nears its conclusion, we will continue to adapt and adjust to the realities of fulltime distance learning. Working together, we will get through these challenging times we are now facing. May God bless you, your families, our school, our River Parishes, and our world. Until we are reunited again in person, remember Go Comets!

With prayers for your continued health and happiness,

NEWS FROM CAMPUS

SCC Faculty Meetings during Distance Learning

The SCC Faculty has been meeting throughout Distance Learning to connect, compare strategies, tackle challenges, and continue to grow as educators. This morning, we prayed together, discussed new online educational platforms, considered new technology to add to our home set-ups, and looked ahead to some business for the end of the school year.

We sure miss our students and fellow faculty members, but we're grateful to see one another and serve the Comet family during this time!

Teacher's Appreciation Week

If you would like to express appreciation for our SCC teachers, we'd love you to help us observe National Teacher's Appreciation Week next week!

Feel free to send special messages through email throughout next week, but if you'd like to drop off gifts or cards for the teachers, the school office will gladly accept and distribute them. If dropping something off at the office, please clearly label your gift/card. The office is open Monday through Thursday from 9am to 2pm. Thank you for helping us express gratitude for these awesome educators!

Fourth Quarter Exams
With regards fourth quarter exams, those students who want to raise their grade will have the option to take the fourth quarter exam which will be either project-based or an individual oral exam through video conferencing.

Senior Exam Week
Senior exams take place May 11 – 14.
With the start of distance learning a little late and given the class schedule, we want to be sure to keep the connection with seniors for at least one more week.
This will allow for exam review and make-up work as needed during the week of May 4.
New content will not be introduced. However, classes will meet to share stories, videos, projects created, etc.
Please visit our social media pages to see our awesome Senior Spotlights! We're so proud of our seniors, and we love to show them off. Let's help them to feel special with likes and comments!

CARE AND VIGILANCE
Please continue to encourage your teenagers and let us know if any of them seem to be floundering in these uncertain times.

Distance Learning Expectations:
Punctuality
Attendance
Participation
Good faith effort
Communication with teachers
Completion of assignments & assessments on time

Join us in praying for the safety of our Comet community and for those throughout the world whose lives have been affected by this COVID-19. In this unprecedented time, please be patient! We will meet the challenges as they arise.

Comets, Keep It Up!
We are so proud of our students as we continue in Distance Learning. We see you and appreciate you for all your hard work and dedication, Comets! Last week, we were able to feature some work from our Theatre classes and Science classes. This week, we'll check in with Math and English! Here are some pictures of our diligent students completing assignments from this week:

Math:
Math classes are doing cooking projects, continual problems practice, and special assignments related to current events! The Robotics class is learning about various ways in which robots are being used in the handling and treatment of Coronavirus. Statistics students have investigated “flattening the curve” in the virus spread, as well calculating a person’s chance of infection based on infection rate in the population and test sensitivity.

English:
English classes have been busy with writing, exploring, researching, and presenting this quarter. Mrs. Flynn's classes are writing original short stories this week based on the works of Flannery O'Connor and Ernest Hemingway. Mrs. Lohfink’s Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition seniors are preparing to take their AP Exam and are wrapping up their final reflective projects. In what has become an end-of-year tradition, her AP seniors display the visual components of their projects in the Red Room, and then Mrs. Lohfink presents them with their outdoor writing photos. Good luck to our AP English Lit students on their upcoming exam and to all of our students taking Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment exams in the next two weeks.

A Token of Gratitude
SCC recently received a very special gift from Mr. Alan Stauder, an SCC parent who wrote expressing how "relieved, thankful, excited and honored" he felt at witnessing our response to the COVID-19 safety regulations & school closures. He went on to say:

"I began working on a cross in honor of SCC’s resurrection of education which occurred during the annual time of our Savior’s resurrection. Using discarded scraps of pine, mahogany salvaged from the trash, and discarded oak pallet boards; I crafted what I call the “Resurrection Cross” thus revealing the beauty within as created by our Lord. I am humbled to give SCC this gift of thanks."

Thank you so much for your generous gift, Mr. Stauder. It will be forever treasured on our campus! We're so happy to be serving the Comet community during this time, and we are humbled by your gift and kind words. God bless!

In closing, please join SCC in the following prayer
from Archbishop Aymond:
Loving and faithful God, the coronavirus reminds us that we have no power and we are dependent on you. We place ourselves in your loving hands. Please give eternal rest to all who have died from the virus. Please put your healing hand on those who are ill, and give your protection to us in this time of fear and uncertainty. Please, calm our fears and help us to trust you as our faithful God. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, pray for us in this time of need. Amen.
