Comet News - Thursday, April 9

News from Campus & General Announcements

Special Message...

Dear Comets,

A Happy Holy Week to all of you! It’s strange that during our High Holy Days – Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday - we will be nowhere near a church and have to be doing church services online. Mrs. Poche and a few students created a lovely Way of the Cross video that we shared today on our social media platforms. Please like and share! I’m so sorry that we will not be having our living Way of the Cross here at SCC today, but we hope you enjoy the video.

During these uncertain times, we must rely on our faith. As Archbishop Aymond reminds us in his recent post, we must “take the example of Jesus” and trust in our Father. As we prepare to celebrate the holiest of days, we pray that your faith and trust in God are strengthened.

On behalf of Mr. Scalco and Mrs. Creppel, we wish you all good health, safety and happiness during our Easter holiday! We return to distance learning on April 20 – let’s return with excitement, preparation, and a commitment to stay on task. May we all experience a glimmer of Easter hope this weekend and so be able to say with our lives and words, "He is risen!"

Let us also pray this Holy Week in a special way for those who are sick from Coronavirus, their families, the doctors, nurses, healthcare professionals, EMTs, and caregivers who are tending to them, and for all those who have suffered financially from a loss of work during this economic shutdown. Be assured that we will continue to keep all of you and your families in our prayers.

Hope to see you soon!

Courtney Millet

Easter Break - April 10-19
Based on the Governor's most recent press conference, school closures will be extended through April 30th. Given this new information, we will be going back to our original spring break schedule for our faculty, staff, students and families. We feel this is in the best interest of our entire Comet family. Therefore, our Easter Break will be April 10-19. Remote learning will resume on Monday, April 20. Please note that some dual enrollment classes may need to meet, assignments may be due, and assessments make take place during this break due to university requirements.
There will be no Comet News during Easter Break, and our social media Senior Spotlight series will resume after Easter Sunday in order to observe the Triduum & celebrate the Resurrection.

Below is a reminder of our home learning schedules:

If you’re looking for a place to celebrate Mass during Holy Week, Father David Ducote, our SCC Co-Chaplain, would like to invite you to virtually join St. Joan of Arc.
💙Holy Thursday Mass: 7PM
💙Good Friday Solemn Service: 3PM
💙Holy Saturday Easter Vigil: 8PM
💙Easter Sunday Mass: 9:30AM
All celebrations will be live streamed on Facebook at “St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church.”

Please note that our SCC Senior Spotlights will resume on
Monday to honor Holy Thursday and Good Friday.

Winter and Spring Sports

We regret to have to share with you this very disheartening news regarding the cancellation of all winter and spring sports. We value and appreciate the hard work, commitment, and school spirit that our student athletes and coaches display throughout the year.

Message from LHSAA April 9 Memo to Principals:
“Since that announcement [Governor John Bell’s Announcement to close schools until April 30, 2020], and due to the severity of the virus and its spread, the continued uncertainty of circumstances surrounding our membership, their facilities, coupled with the importance of protecting the health and safety of our athletes, their families, potential spectators, coaches and game officials, the LHSAA Executive Committee, on recommendation from this office and its staff, approved the cancellation of all remaining 2019-2020 winter sports championships, as well as, all spring sports regular seasons and those respective spring sport championships.”

A note from Coach Monica:
"We're awfully sorry that we can't continue the athletically competitive nature of our Winter & Spring sports seasons. It's a real disappointment. We're so sorry for our seniors who waited for these seasons & wish them the best in their future endeavors be they on the field or off. We'd love to give some closure at a later date, and we'll be in contact about conferring letters, honors, and awards. Look for messages from your coaches about collecting any outstanding gear. We look forward to starting to condition for next year's Fall sports, and we encourage our girls and guys to stay active, keep working out, and keep improving during this time. We really believe in you all."

Coach Monica also wanted Comet Country to know that the golf tournament scheduled for June 5 is still on the calendar. Please continue to look out for more news concerning SCC athletics in the weeks ahead.

We must stay focused even during our Easter Holidays. Encourage your teenagers and let us know if any of them seem to be floundering in these uncertain times.

The following are expected of all students as we resume our Distance Learning on April 20:
Good faith effort
Communication with teachers
Completion of assignments & assessments on time

Join us in praying for the safety of our Comet community and for those throughout the world whose lives have been affected by this COVID19. In this unprecedented time and uncharted water, please be patient! We will experience glitches in our plan and encounter unforeseen obstacles. We will meet the challenges as they arise. You can assume that all events through April 30 are cancelled. If we can re-schedule after that, we certainly will. It is our hope to return to SCC on May 1, and reschedule our traditional year end events.

In closing, please join SCC in the following prayer
from Archbishop Aymond:
Loving and faithful God, the coronavirus reminds us that we have no power and we are dependent on you. We place ourselves in your loving hands. Please give eternal rest to all who have died from the virus. Please put your healing hand on those who are ill, and give your protection to us in this time of fear and uncertainty. Please, calm our fears and help us to trust you as our faithful God. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, pray for us in this time of need. Amen.
