2017 season

State Meet

All the runners did an awesome job as they competed in Natchitoches at Northwestern Louisiana University.  Our girls team placed 8th overall, lead by Courtney Brouwer who placed 22nd with a time of 21:54.1 and Gabby Portillo with a time of 22:51.3.  

The Boys gave an excellent performance, and top boys were Devon Rucker with 19:21.8 and Gregory Bergeron with 20:01.0.

District Meet

The SCC Cross Country team competed in the District Meet hosted by Lusher in Audubon Park on Wednesday, November 2.  Both the boys and girl’s teams were highly competitive, and several students beat their personal records.  Devon Rucker, Courtney Brouwer, Gabriella Portillo, Jessica Basilides, and Dominic Boesen were outstanding for the Comets! Please continue to pray for the Cross Country team as they prepare for the State meet on November 14 at Northwestern Louisiana State University in Natchitoches, LA.  Go Comets!

River Parish Meet

The SCC Cross Country team gave a stellar performance on Saturday, October 28, at the River Parish Championship hosted by East Saint John High School.  In the three mile race, several Comets beat their personal records, and two Comets placed in their races! Courtney Brouwer placed 14th in the Varsity Girls race, and Devon Rucker finished 11th in the Varsity Boys race.  The girls also placed 3rd overall, earning SCC the first Cross Country trophy of the year! Great job Comets! District meet takes place on November 2 at Audubon Park, and the State Meet will take place in Natchitoches on November 14, 2017. 

Jack Shommer Invitational

SCC’s Cross Country team competed at City Park in New Orleans in Brother Martin’s Jack Shommer Invitational on October 23, 2017.  SCC's only 8th grade runner, Joseph Haydel, competed in the Middle School race, while the rest of the team competed in the High School Varsity 3 mile race.  Top performers included:  Courtney Brouwer ( 24:09.17), Ga
briella Portillo (24:11.03), Lauren St. Martin (25:05.29),  Devon Rucker (19:57.23), and Gregory Bergeron (21:37.40).  Several runners performed their personal bests in this race, and Coach Taylor and Coach Flynn were extremely proud of the Comets’ performances.  The next meet will take place on Saturday, October 28, in LaPlace, and the Comets will race again on November 2 in Audubon Park, New Orleans

Newman CC Classic

The SCC Cross Country team traveled to Audubon Park on Wednesday, September 27, to compete in the Newman Cross Country Classic along with several other schools from the region such as Cabrini, Jesuit, Newman, McGehee, Lusher, Dominican, and St. Martin’s.

Students competed in elementary, middle school, and high school races throughout the afternoon, and the Comets made their presence known in the 3 mile high school competition. Top performers include the following: Devon Rucker who beat his personal record, running a 19:49.9; Dominic Boesen, 21:11.1; Gregory Bergeron, 21:45.2; Gabriella Portillo, 25:27.0; Courtney Brouwer, 25:41.2; Lauren St. Martin, 27:46.0; Jessica Bassilldes, 27:55.0; and Ashleigh Zaidain, 27:56.2 .

Coach Taylor and Coach Flynn are very proud of the Cross Country Comets.

LSU Invitational

On Saturday, September 16, the SCC Cross Country team competed in the LSU Invitational Meet at Highland Park in Baton Rouge. All runners completed a 5K, 3.2miles, over a track made of slopes and hills after a brief morning rain. SCC had one of the largest groups in the meet, and our Comets all rose to the challenge and finished strong. Top performers included Gregory Bergeron, who finished at 23:42.6, Devon Rucker, 24:03.2, Luke Ringer, 25:22.7, Ishan Iyer, 26:02.9, Kevin Dauenhauer, 26:39.0, Courtney Brouwer, 26:20.7, and Gabriella Portillo, 27:23.2.  New members Melody Newsome, Alani Dew, Blakely Heltz, Lauren St. Martin, Saige Clark, and Joseph Haydel competed for the first time in the 5k race.  Coaches Courtland Taylor and Carly Flynn were pleased and proud of all the performances, and they watched each cross the finish line with a group of friends and family to cheer on the runners. The next race will be Wednesday, September 27, at Audubon Park in New Orleans.  Go Comets!

All State Sugar Cross Country Festival

Congratulations to all participants who competed in the All State Sugar Cross Country Festival hosted by Loyola University at Lafrenere (Sp) Park this past Saturday. The participants were Courtney Brouwer, Gabriella Portillo, Lauren St. Martin, Sejal Patel, Ashleigh Zaidan, Blakely Heltz, Saige Clark, Jesseca Basilldes, Melody Newsome, Alani Dew, Devon Rucker, Dominic Boesen, Greg Bergeron, Kevin Daunhauer, Luke Ringe, Ishan Iyer, and Joseph Haydel.

Among these competitors the comets had 2 top 25 finishers in both girls and boys varsity. Devon Rucker finished 15th with a time of 20:54, Courtney Brouwer finished with a 26:12, and Gabriella Portillo finished with a 26:13.

Great job by all performers finishing with personal records. The comets will be back in action Saturday, September 16th at Highland Park.
