Shelby Reine Signs With Texas A&M
Shelby Reine signed her National Letter of Intent with Texas A & M Equestrian at St. Charles Catholic High School. The room was filled with administrators, teachers, students, and family showing their support. Besides being a decorated rider, Reine maintains a 3.8 GPA and is an active students at St. Charles Catholic High School. Principal Drew Cupit stated, “By every standard, Shelby is an outstanding student. She has demonstrated a commitment to her studies and her sport. We look forward to hearing about her future accomplishments at Texas A & M.”
The room was filled with excitement as Reine signed her National Letter of Intent. She stated, “I would like to thank St. Charles Catholic High School for allowing me to continue to compete, by adding an equestrian team to our athletic program. I owe a lot of thanks to my parents, grandparents, family, trainers, friends, school, and horses because without them, this longtime goal of mine would not have been possible.”
Reine competes nationally in the equestrian sport of reining in American Quarter Horse Association and National Reining Horse Association Horse Shows. The senior has been on a horse since she was 18 months old. She got her first pony, Cutie Girl, at the age of 2. Her grandfather, the late Mack E. Reine Jr., shared his love of horses with Shelby at a young age and had a major role in her becoming the horsewoman she is today. Since a young age, Shelby has earned many top awards in the horse world.
Reine’s greatest accomplishments include: Two time American Quarter Horse Youth Association (AQHYA) World Champion in Ranch Riding, NRHA Derby Finalist in Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4, NRBC Derby Finalist in Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4. Reine is also a six-time AQHYA top ten World Finalist and two-time top five AQHYA World Finalist.
Reine's goal since a young child, was to earn a scholarship and ride on the Texas A & M Equestrian team. “I am so proud to be the first Aggie Equestrian signee from the state of Louisiana, and I am truly honored to have been selected to compete for the currently #1 ranked NCEA Aggie Equestrian Team and can't wait to become an Aggie, gig’ em!”
Reine trains under Sebastian Petroll of Whitesboro, Texas. Reine plans to major in Animal Science with a focus on pre-pharmacy. She is the daughter of Michael and Alisha Reine, and the granddaughter of Ernest Jr. and Debbie Heltz, The late Mack E. Reine Jr. and Juliette Reine.
Shelby Reine Wins Second World Championship Title
The American Quarter Horse Association, Oklahoma City – Shelby Reine, the daughter of Michael and Alisha Reine, a Junior at St. Charles Catholic High School in LaPlace, LA and a member of the school’s equestrian team, captured her second world championship title in ranch riding at the 2015 Built Ford Tough American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Championship Show on August 4 in Oklahoma City.
Reine showed her American Quarter Horse Keepyourgunsloaded. The 2002 sorrel gelding, sired by Hes A Loaded Gun and out of Toodie Star, was bred by Mary
Jansma of Tioga, Texas. Reine is trained by Sebastain Petroll of Whitesboro, Texas.
In the ranch riding, 130 entries competed for world champion honors. World champions received a prize package that included a custom-designed gold trophy; Montana Silversmiths buckle; specially designed logoed jacket, courtesy of Cripple Creek Outerwear; a WeatherBeeta embroidered blanket; world champion patch; neck wreath; and gold medallion.
In addition to winning the world title in ranch riding, Shelby Reine also was a world finalist in reining on the horse Alley Cattin King.
The Ford Youth World is the pinnacle event for American Quarter Horse exhibitors ages 18 and under around the world, who must qualify for the event by earning a predetermined number of points to compete in each of the classes representing halter, English and western disciplines. More than 2,000 entries from the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden and United Kingdom are competing for 35 world championships at this year’s event, July 31 - August 8 in Oklahoma City.
