Softball season getting closer
The rain and the cold weather have welcomed softball season, and the Lady Comets are anxious to begin. The team has been practicing and working on fundamentals. The Lady Comets’ will play their opening game against Covington, Wednesday, February 17.

During the summer the girls had the chance to play together as a team in a couple of tournaments. They got a head start by focusing on what needed to be improved for their upcoming season. The Comets are returning six seniors, who will all be starting varsity players.

Coach Ty Monica, head coach of the softball team, graduated from St. Charles, where he played baseball and football. He coaches football also, claiming the title of offensive coordinator and the wide receivers’ coach. Monica also teaches Geometry andPhysical Education classes. He is assisted in coaching by Gary Western and Mike Pecoraro.

Monica is anxious for the season to begin to get rid of the disappointment from last year’s season. He said, “I feel this season will go as the first five games go. If we play well, we will be there in the end; if not, it will be a long season.” Coach Ty is trying his best to not end any senior’s career before it is supposed to. He wants the team to get off to a good start, so the season can also end well. Monica adds, “There are goals to be set and reached. With 14 wins during the season, the 2010 senior class will be  the class with the most wins in school history. My first goal is for my first senior class, the class I raised, to be the leaders of wins.”

Opening their season, the Lady Comets played Vandebilt in a scrimmage. The game went well, and pointed out to the girls what needs to be improved as individuals and as a team.
