Girls Basketball Mid-Season Update
Just over halfway through their games, the Lady Comets are currently sitting at 13th in the Power Rankings for Division III Select standings. The team is off to a 7-13 (going into this evening’s game vs Chappelle).
The team started off strong by defeating Maurepas for the season opener. Their next opponent, Live Oak, showed off the inexperience of the team. The Lady Comets came back home to defeat Northlake Christian in a come-from-behind victory. After dropping a tough game to Dunham, the Comets went to Hahnville for a tournament where they dropped 3 games against 3 tough opponents. After a loss to Kenner Discovery on the road, the Comets traveled to Lutcher where they won in dominating fashion. The “Christmas Game” was the next day and the Comets took care of business again. The first week of the Christmas break, the team dropped two on the road before heading to the Haynes Tournament where they went 2-1. Returning from the break, the Lady Comets have played some very fierce competition. They ended the week last week with a win against Ascension Christian.
For the season, Senior Mya Brown is the leading scorer, rebounder, and shot blocker for the team while Chavez Smith is second in those categories. Smith (a Freshman) and several other freshmen, including Katelyn Hebert, Jaiya Bailey, and Chassidy Gaitlyn, have seen significant playing time this season. Sophomore Megan McMillon has been a steady defender for the team and has recently been a contributor on offense. Taylor Robinson has contributed on the boards. While the team has faced some injuries throughout the season, several people have stepped into key roles and have helped contribute to the Comets'success.
