College Advising

  • The SCC guidance department provides students with the support they need to develop academically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. We help them lay the groundwork and enable them to become critical thinkers and effective communicators committed to service and rooted in faith.

The College Advisor guides and supports SCC students and their families through: the college search, the application process, and scholarship and financial aid processes.  Students are provided with the resources needed to research their future opportunities and to make informed decisions regarding their post-secondary education and career choices. The College Advisor endeavors to work with students as individuals, to understand who they are beyond the classroom, and to help them find a college that will provide a challenging and comfortable environment for them on all levels.

The college counseling process begins in the eighth-grade year; students are encouraged to understand that college preparation is a compilation of their entire high school academic and extracurricular experience. The College Advisor seeks to build an open relationship with students and their families in order to understand all of the factors involved as the college list is developed. The College Advisor’s role is to assist and advocate for students and to make sure that choices are informed and appropriate.

The college advisor’s office has an extensive library of materials available for students to access information on colleges, financial aid, scholarships, college athletics, and careers.  All students are encouraged to discuss their post-secondary opportunities with the College Advisor.
