Comets Win First State Championship

The second-seeded St. Charles Comets captured the 3A state championship 9-8 in a defensive thriller over the fourth-seeded Amite Warriors at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Both teams come into the contest with defenses that were allowing under a touchdown per game on average. Both units lived up to their reputation.

With 9:12 remaining in the fourth, Amite found themselves down 9-0 but finally grabbed some momentum on offense. Starting on their own 45-yard line, the Warriors would march 55 yards in just three plays. A 36-yard pass from Reginald Porter to James Oden down the sideline set up a four-yard touchdown run from Porter to pull the Warriors within 9-6. After a pair of flags, Amite decided to go for a two-point conversion and converted with yet another pass from Porter to Oden to make it a one-point game.

St. Charles (15-0) drove the ball on their next possession to the Amite 28, aided by a 35-yard return from Jeffrey Hall. On a 4th and long, Comets quarterback Donnie Savoie threw a pass into coverage, and Christian Cotton picked it off for Amite at his own 5 yard line.

After defensive linemen Taylor Cochran swatted a pass down on 3rd and 10 to set up another punt by Amite. Marcus Hall returned the short kick 12 yards to set the Comets up at the Amite 20. After a few plays, Amite used their final timeout with 2:34 left with St. Charles facing 4th and 1. On the ensuing play, banged-up running back Lazedrick Thompson plowed ahead for three yards to ensure a Comets victory.

"Coach looked around. He asked which back would get the first down," Thompson said. "And I just told him give it to me."

Thompson's coach, Frank Monica, was as humble as ever when speaking about the win. "We just defeated a very good football team," Monica said. "We had some bad match-ups up front and I think we lost that early momentum. We got a couple breaks on special teams, and we knew we had to do well on special teams."

Both Comet running backs, the aforementioned Thompson and Marcus Hall, had suffered injuries earlier in the season. Marcus was back at full strength, but Thompson was clearly still less than full strength and limping throughout the game. Despite Thompson's injury, he still came up big when the Comets needed him to on the short-yardage play that allowed his team to run out the clock.

"It was hurting a lot," admitted Thompson about his leg. "But it's the state championship game. I had to show up for my team."

In the first quarter, St. Charles started off on fire, capturing the momentum after Cochran blocked an Amite punt. The Comets took over at the Amite 33 yard line and quickly drove to the Amite 3 where fullback Brandon Zimmer punched it in to put the Comets ahead. The extra point attempt was missed, leaving St. Charles ahead 6-0.

The next Amite possession ended in a turnover, when Porter's pass was picked off by Ross Authement. The Comets set up shop at the Warriors nine-yard line after the return, but the Warriors made a key stand defensively to force St. Charles into a three-and-out. icker Patrick Juneau redeemed himself for the missed point-after and drilled a 29-yard field goal. Those point were all the Comets could muster against the stout Amite defense, but the Comets made that lead hold up.

The early nerves in this big game turned out to be the difference on the scoreboard. St. Charles took advantage of big plays out of the gates. It was a defensive struggle to say the least with both teams combining for just 305 total yards.

Marcus Hall won the most outstanding player award for the Comets and managed 112 all-purpose yards. Porter, Amite's starting quarterback and cornerback, won the other MOP honor after he totaled 123 yards through the air with one touchdown, 29 rushing yards and 7 solo tackles in the game.

Monica and the Comets take home their first title in school history, while Monica himself has won a title at three different schools.

Comets Edge Parkview in Semifinal Thriller

St. Charles Catholic advances to the state finals for the third time in schools history with a last-second victory over defending Class 3A champion Parkview Baptist, 24-21, in LaPlace. The game that could have gone either way, but it was the Comets that would come out victorious with a late field goal.

Patrick Juneau nailed a 21-yard field goal with four seconds remaining.

"We are so excited for our community," St. Charles head coach Frank Monica said. "When you beat a team like Parkview, it's a monumental win for us. We know how good they are."

St. Charles (14-0) had rallied from a 14-0 deficit. Facing a 3rd and 18 with just over 5 minutes remaining, St. Charles quarterback Donnie Savoie connected with Chris Millet for a 19-yard pass, keeping the drive alive for the Comets. On the next play, Savoie connected with Jeffrey Hall for a 53-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 21.

The next possession for Parkview Baptist was stopped after Dante Scarpero and Luke Jackson made the key stop on a third-and-one play, allowing the Comets to get the ball with 2:54 left in the game. The Comets started the ball on their own 40 and with the help of a pass interference call worked their way into field goal range. After a second-and-long conversion thanks to the legs on Savoie, a Lazedrick Thompson run inside the Parkview five yard line set up the winning kick.

Donnie Savoie completed 14-of-25 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns.

The game looked like it was going to be all Parkview in the early stages. The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead after marching down the field with the help of a 30-yard run by Brennan Bozeman to set up his one-yard sneak for a touchdown. The Comets then put together a drive of their own but Savoie threw an interception to Cole Wilson in the red zone.

Parkview took advantage of the miscue. After a 41-yard run by Hezekiah Randolph, Conner Hodgeson took one in from two-yards out to put the Eagles up 14-0 in the 1st quarter.

St. Charles has no intentions going down without a fight and drove down the field. A 31-yard scoring pass from Savoie to Sammy Miller pulled the Comets within seven points. On the Eagles' next possession, Jeffrey Hall came up big, stripping the ball on a fourth-and-two at the SCC 48. Brody Burkhalter had gained enough yardage for a first down Hall's key play allowed Montegut to pounce on the loose ball.

The Comets would take advantage of the great field position. A 21-yard pass from Savoie to Miller set up a one yard touchdown run by Thompson to tie the game at 14 before the half.

Parkview Baptist (9-4) immediately took control in the third quarter, picking the ball off at the Comets 20. The Eagles weren't able to convert though, missing a field goal attempt.

The Eagles drove 74 yards in 10 plays to take a fourth quarter lead. Hodgeson punched in a 20-yard touchdown run midway through the final quarter to cap the march.

But that's when the Comets decided that their perfect season would not end short of the state title game. A 3A championship showdown with Amite awaits.

"I think Amite is pretty much a powerhouse and a household name on the Northshore for a long time," Monica said. "They have great ability, great speed, size, and everyone raves about their great defense. Right away, we got to put this one behind us and get back down to work."

St. Charles will take the turf next Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Comets seek the first state title in school history.(Written by Jason Duhe (Class of 2010) for SportsNola.com)

Comets Record First District Win

The Comets expected a tough battle with the Donaldsonville Tigers as they opened district 7-3A last Friday night in Dupuy stadium.  For the first 24 minutes the Tigers gave the Comets all they could handle even though the Comets held a 21- 8 lead. But the Comet team that came out of the locker room at half was not the same one the Tigers saw earlier and the Comets dominated the Tigers 28-0 pulling away for a 49-8 victory.

The Comets raised the intensity in the second half with a punishing ground game that controlled the ball and wore down the Tigers who had several players going both ways. Lazedrick Thompson plowed through Tiger defenders with physical runs that demoralized the visitors. Thompson rushed for 163 yards on 16 carries and touchdown runs of 6,5,1, and 8 yards.

The Comet defense which surrendered over 300 yards to the Tigers always seemed to come up with big plays in the redzone to halt scoring drives. Tulane commitment Devon Breaux proved to be a tough competitor rushing and throwing for 270 yards combined for the Tigers. But the Comet defense administered some tough hits  which took their toll on the shifty quarterback in the second half.

Marcus Hall rushed for 100 yards on 13 carries and scored one touchdown on a 31 yard run. Comets Dominate Tate 42-0

The Comets opened the 2011 season Friday night in Florida some 400 miles away from Louisiana and the ill effects of tropical storm Lee. While the post-game beach weekend for some fans turned out to be a wash, the Comets were high and dry in posting a dominating 42-0 over the Tate Aggies in Cantonment just north of Pensacola.

It was a total team effort with high levels of success on offense, defense and special teams. Thompson rushed for 141 yards and one touchdown. He had one touchdown called back because of a penalty. Next up for the Comets will be the Vandebilt Terriers on the road Friday night in Houma.

2011 Comet Football Preview

The Comets of St. Charles Catholic have been to the state semi-finals four times since 2005, including two consecutive trips to the State Finals in 2005 and 2006. Most recently, head coach Frank Monica has led his troops to the semi-finals in 2009 and 2010.  All of these playoff accomplishments have been in 2A.

Now Monica and his Comets look to take on the competition in Class 3A.

Monica never has constructed an easy schedule, and this year is no exception. St. Charles will be taking an early road trip week 1 to Tate High School in Florida. Their next game is another away date against an improving Class 4A Vandebilt Catholic. The Comets also have a rematch from last year’s playoffs with Jeanerette. St. Charles’ new district isn’t much easier as they take on Donaldsonville, St. James, and E.D. White.

Monica is aware of how important every game is and says power rating trumps the importance of any one game. “Your non-district games are just as important as your district ones. The most important thing is the power rating system. So you have to win your games whether they are district or non-district,” Monica explained. “I can’t get caught up in the district and non-district; I have to convince my team that every game is affecting your power rating.”

The tandem of Marcus Hall and Lazedrick Thompson lead the way for the Comets offense. The former is a shift 5-foot-8 senior who makes big plays in the open field. The latter is a Tulane commitment for the 2012 class who brings power to the rushing attack.

Both backs are explosive and athletic runners in the ground game. Monica knows for his team to be successful, these two need to produce.

“Lazedrick Thompson is a downhill guy and just a powerful runner, where Marcus is more of a wiggle guy,” said Monica. “They complement each other extremely well. They’re difference makers. Sometimes you don’t block everybody and they still get the ball in the end zone. We need to make sure Lazedrick and Marcus touch the ball as much as possible.”

St. Charles also is led by an experienced senior quarterback Donnie Savoie. This is the first time in three seasons that Monica has the advantage of returning a senior starting quarterback. “[Savoie] is back and that’s a huge plus. He knows what to do and he knows the offense in and out. What he lacks in arm strength he makes up for in intelligence.”

Two areas of concern for the Comets offense come from the offensive line and the receiver positions. St. Charles needs to replace four of five offensive linemen and a tight end from last season’s starting front. St. Charles lacks proven depth at the receiver position but will rely heavily on Sammy Miller.

On defense, the Comets are ready to lean on a talented and experienced front seven, but it’s tough to know how this unit will turn out. Defensive end LaJaylin Smith is going into his 5th season as a starter and looks to continue his success. “We center our defense around LaJaylin Smith. He is a fine player, and that’s a kid that is going to play at the next level.,” Monica noted. “You know that he knows what to do and he is a very physical player. “

Taylor Cochran is another defensive linemen for the Comets expected to cause mayhem for opposing offenses. He has been a big part of the Comets defense but hasn’t been as consistent as the coaching staff would have liked in the past. “He needs to be an every down player. He is strong and brings so much to the table. He’s had a good off season, so we are expecting him to have a fine season for us,” said Monica.

The Comets only have one returning starter in the secondary in Macky Cortez. Jeffrey Hall was a wide receiver last season but is set to play defensive back this year. His athleticism in the secondary is expected to help him overcome any learning curve.

One aspect that St. Charles consistently excels in is special teams, something that Monica emphasizes to his team each season. But the Comets have to replace an all-state punter and a kicker for the upcoming year.

However, dangerous return man Marcus Hall has proved time-and-time again to be a game-changer. Monica said they need to get their kickers ready and allow Hall to be a big part of the return game. “We lost an all-state punter and we have to break in a brand new kicker,” said Monica. “I don’t want our team to be a reflection of our kicker and our punter, I still want our coverage team to be good and the return game to be able to get Marcus loose.”

A successful prep and college coach for decades, Monica has had an excellent career at St. Charles but has yet to win a state title. He is happy with what he has been able to accomplish at his time in LaPlace but wants to cement his program’s legacy by winning a state title.

“We have a respected program and that’s all I want, but I would like to see this team take the next step. We have had some success here, but we haven’t gotten the big crown. It’s time for us to finally finish. And we are working towards that.”

St. Charles has had a good bit of success in 2A, but now has to try to convert that into success at the next level. No one doubts the Comets will be a force to reckoned with by their newfound foes in a higher class.
